At the Grand Elisabeth in Bad Ischl I discover how imperial elegance, alpine slowness and modern pleasure melt into one very particular retreat.
When I arrive in Bad Ischl a particular calm lies over the town. Among historic façades, small cafés and the spa gardens you feel at once that imperial sense of life which still shapes the place. Right here, only a few steps from the Kaiservilla, the Grand Elisabeth combines tradition with modern luxury.
From the moment you walk in, the hotel reads as a homage to Empress Elisabeth — but without nostalgic kitsch. Instead the house goes for elegance with a modern twist: warm colours, clean lines and small details that recall the rebellious empress.

What I like most is the relaxed atmosphere. For all its elegance the Grand Elisabeth never feels stiff — exactly right for a weekend between wellness, good food and culture.
At the table the hotel quickly becomes a meeting point in its own right. In the Grand Liberté restaurant, head chef Daniel Gschwandtner interprets Salzkammergut classics with surprising modernity. Add to that the desserts from the house of Zauner — by the time you reach the famous Zaunerstollen at the latest, it is clear why Bad Ischl would be hard to imagine without its sweet tradition.

In the evening the day winds down at the Violet Hour Bar over a violet spritz. My own favourite retreat, though, is the Organic Alps Spa by Dorissima. The warm indoor pool, alpine treatments with arnica and edelweiss and the quiet atmosphere create exactly the slowness that suits Bad Ischl so well.
What remains at the end is the feeling of having been not simply in a hotel, but in a world where pleasure, rest and history come together as a matter of course.
