Winter in the Florida Keys means mild temperatures, breathtaking waters and a wealth of possibilities. No wonder more than 300,000 queer people travel to the southernmost part of Florida every year.

You take the hire car along the Florida Keys Overseas Highway to Key West. The drive alone is spectacular – with unique views of turquoise water and bright green islands. The road crosses 42 bridges, and each island is more beautiful than the last. Then come sunny days on the beach, snorkelling on the coral reef, kayaking through subtropical mangrove forests or a visit to Hemingway’s iconic home. In the evening, the community meets in the gay bars on Duval Street or at one of the many queer events held throughout the year.

Gay Key West came into being after writers and artists such as Tennessee Williams discovered the island’s welcoming spirit. In the 1970s, a growing LGBTQ+ community began restoring the old town, opening guesthouses and building the culture that shapes today’s inclusive destination.

Why we love the Florida Keys

Gay-friendly resorts — Numerous hotels, resorts and B&Bs clearly position themselves as gay-friendly. From charming small guesthouses to larger complexes – many of them are LGBTQ+-owned.
Island House — This all-male, clothing-optional resort is known for its relaxed, open atmosphere. Guests enjoy sunny days by the pool, an easy-going community and cosy rooms in the old town.
Shopping, shows and nightlife — Key West’s LGBTQ+ nightlife is centred on hotspots such as Aqua Nightclub – known for its high-energy drag shows. Every Sunday evening, La Te Da is the place to be.
Art and culture — From changing exhibitions at The Studios of Key West to more than 30 galleries and the seasonal Artisan Market, the island presents a colourful mosaic of culture and local flair.
Outdoor adventures — Kayak tours with gay-friendly guides, boat charters, diving, snorkelling, stand-up paddling or romantic sunset cruises – the options are many.
Turtle Hospital — The Turtle Hospital in Marathon is a non-profit organisation dedicated to the rescue, care and release of endangered sea turtles.
Direct flight with SWISS

In winter, SWISS offers around 10 direct flights a week to Miami. From there, the drive along the Overseas Highway takes you to Key West in about four hours – dreamy panoramic views included.
