The Grand Canyon briefly leaves you lost for words, before Route 66, with its classic cars and diners, spins the nostalgic road-trip myth a little further.
The roads stretch through dry expanses, past red rocks, dusty plains and small towns that look as though they have been waiting decades for a road movie.
At the Grand Canyon, everything becomes very impressive very quickly. In front of you lies a cut in the earth so vast that your mind briefly can’t keep up. Layers of red, brown, gold and blue stretch to the horizon, the colours shift with the light, and somewhere far below, the Colorado River works its way through millions of years of the Earth’s history.

The canyon is especially beautiful towards evening. As the sun sinks lower, the rock faces gain contour, shadows move through the gorge, and the whole landscape suddenly looks far more dramatic. A sunset tour is therefore a must.
After that, the journey leads back into another American legend: Route 66. Williams, Kingman, old signs, diners, souvenir shops and that charming mix of nostalgia, kitsch and genuine road-trip romance. It is these small towns above all that give the end of the trip its strength. After the nature comes America once more in its most classic form: a little dust, a little chrome, a little neon – and the feeling that you’d still like to keep driving down this road.
