Los Cabos lies at the southern tip of Baja California, which makes it feel like a small island. The region is still considered an insider tip, even if you can sense that it is slowly being discovered. Endless beaches, creative art towns, whale watching along the coast and breathtaking hikes in the desert are what make it so appealing.

Los Cabos is by far one of the safest places in Mexico. And it isn’t just safe, it is also remarkably clean. One reason is that none of the notorious drug routes run through the region. At the same time, tourism here is actively encouraged. The place isn’t overrun yet, but the growth is noticeable.

In Spanish, “cabo” means “cape”. Los Cabos therefore describes the headlands of the region – among them Cabo Pulmo, Cabo Frailes, San José del Cabo, Cabo San Lucas and Cabo Falso. The best time to travel is from November to May. Temperatures are pleasant then and the chances of seeing whales are high.

Queer Los Cabos

Los Cabos

As a queer person, you can experience Los Cabos openly and carefree. Great importance is placed on making everyone feel welcome – large hotel chains even work with their own human rights specialists to put inclusion into practice.

The region attracts fewer party-goers and more travellers looking for peace, nature and unforgettable experiences. Many hotels are geared towards couples, with a wide range of offers from weddings and engagements to anniversaries. Still, there are a few spots for queer nightlife: Bar Ligaya in the Art District of San José del Cabo offers a stylish, modern atmosphere, while Chandelier’s Club in Cabo San Lucas reflects more of the local party scene. Pride is celebrated in June, with events in the streets, on the beaches and even on sunset boat trips.

Hotel San Cristóbal in Todos Santos

Los Cabos

In June, Hotel San Cristóbal joins in with its own Pride party, called “Pride a la Playita”. It’s a mix of laid-back beach vibe, music and a relaxed community, right by the sea and far from the classic club scenes.

The hotel is in Todos Santos, a retreat away from the bustle. Built right on the coast, it blends almost seamlessly into the landscape with its open architecture, warm colours and natural materials. Everything feels calm and considered. A place where you automatically become more mindful. The Swiss general manager, Cyrillus Michel, shares his insider tip with us: the cliff hike right next to the hotel up to the Mirador Punta Lobos.

Mirador Punta Lobos

Los Cabos

The hike offers one of the most beautiful views of the turquoise water and the cliffs of Todos Santos. An early start in the morning is especially recommended, as the heat can quickly become intense towards midday. The trail starts right at Hotel San Cristóbal and the hike takes 2.5 hours. Walk all the way to the tip and, with a little luck, you’ll be rewarded with a special moment: sea lions sunning themselves on the rocks or playing in the water below.

San José del Cabo: more than just an art town

Los Cabos

San José del Cabo is where travellers come to rest. The town is shaped by art, and the centre is easy to explore on foot. Every Thursday, the so-called Art Walk takes place here. We took part too, accompanied by our guide Kristian, whose family has been rooted in San José for generations.

Between historic buildings and small galleries, you learn how the town keeps reinventing itself. Newcomers from the USA and Europe created space for creativity: little by little, more and more artists settled here and shaped the townscape with their work. And so, step by step, San José del Cabo became the art town it is today.

DISPLAY tips for Los Cabos

Whale watching — With a little luck, you’ll get up close to whales here, often even a mother and calf. The encounter on the open sea is one of the most impressive experiences in the region.
Flora Farms — More than just a farm: the cooking class is especially recommended – you prepare local dishes such as tamales and make one of the best guacamoles yourself.
Mezcal tasting — At the mezcal tasting at Salara Boutique Hotel with Rolando, also known as “Dr. Agave”, you learn why mezcal is enjoyed here with so much respect and passion.
Casa Natalia, San José del Cabo — A small boutique hotel in the heart of San José with just a few rooms, plenty of privacy and a quiet courtyard with a pool.
Road trips — The region is best explored in a 4x4. Driving along the coast or through the desert, you discover remote beaches and unexpected views.
Snorkelling in Cabo Pulmo — Cabo Pulmo is one of the most species-rich coral reefs in Mexico. Ideal for snorkelling with fish, dolphins and sometimes even sea lions. The drive back along the coast takes you past wild beaches and free-roaming donkeys.
