Faro is not only the gateway to the Algarve, but also the perfect start to a summer full of beach vibes, wild nature and Portuguese sensuality. And the best part: in just under three hours with Edelweiss, you’re there – and ready for a dash of the south that does you real good.
Where the south embraces you
When golden light meets rugged rocks and the Atlantic surges powerfully against untouched coastlines, the true soul of the Algarve reveals itself. In the heart of the region, Faro welcomes you with a perfect balance of historical heritage and laid-back atmosphere. Hidden between medieval fortress walls are authentic taverns where a hearty fish stew and a cool vinho verde taste like nowhere else after a day of exploring.

Follow the coast road westwards and, near Lagos, you are rewarded with one of the most spectacular natural sights in Europe: at Ponta da Piedade, wind and waves have created over millennia a dramatic landscape of golden-yellow cliffs, hidden grottoes and natural stone arches. Speedboats race through the rock formations while the brave leap from the cliffs into the crystal-clear turquoise.
Like a well-kept legend, the Benagil cave lures those who are ready to conquer it. This underground sandy beach, with its circular opening to the sky, is best experienced from your own kayak – a physical challenge.

At the south-westernmost tip of Europe, Cabo de São Vicente juts into the sea like a stone sentinel. Where Portuguese explorers once set out into the unknown, today you can stand on wind-battered cliffs and feel the untamed Atlantic at your feet. The historic lighthouse creates perfect moments of self-reflection amid spectacular sunsets.
For surfers, the region offers first-class spots with Atlantic power. Between Sagres and the Costa Vicentina, even experienced surfers find challenging breaks, while more sheltered bays offer ideal conditions for beginners. After a day in the water, like-minded people meet in relaxed beach bars, where the day ends perfectly over a local beer.

With Edelweiss nonstop to Faro. In Business Class, 188 centimetres of seat pitch and a flat bed await you; in Economy Max, there are 89 centimetres of legroom, a footrest and a personal 9-inch screen. And because Swissness flies too, there’s Rivella, Biberli and Quöllfrisch on board.
